My Social Prescription
Do you want to feel healthier, happier and more involved in your community?
Launched in 2013, ‘My Social Prescription’ is a community based scheme led by Colchester Community Voluntary Services to connect community members to voluntary and community services and volunteers to improve health and wellbeing. It does this by addressing the social issues that people often approach medical staff, as well as providing support with their health conditions and encouraging self-care.
This is achieved by identifying the most appropriate referral, utilising community assets (i.e. people, services, community resources) to respond to the social need, ultimately improving the quality of life of the patient and family and reducing demand on public services. It also reduces duplication of effort, plus encourages independence and self-care.

The scheme operates across North East Essex. It has been designed to reduce time spent finding the help people need by informing them of the right service, in the right place, first time.

Are you interested in becoming a MSP Volunteer?
Colchester Community Voluntary Services (CCVS) are looking for friendly and approachable people to work alongside local health establishments, such as GP surgeries, libraries and Health Centres.
You will need to be a good communicator and will be based in varied locations, local surgeries, health establishments or at one off community events. Your role will involve sign posting people to a whole range of services that could help them to improve their daily lives and /or health concerns.
No volunteer will be asked to work alone; there will always be at least two volunteers in any one establishment at any one time.
The hours will be flexible and dependent upon the establishment.
All training will be provided and regular support will be offered, as well as social meetings and activities.
- Self motivating, enthusiastic, and confident
- Caring and non-judgmental
- Able to communicate effectively with a wide range of people
- Be confident and comfortable in discussing personal matters with people
- Be comfortable with using IT
